Representatives From All organizations are testing the Meditech Expanse System.
An important milestone in our organization’s transition to Meditech Expanse is “Integrated Systems Testing – Round 2” (IST2) and it’s underway!
In Simple Terms:
Integrated Systems Testing (Round 2) = “Workflow Testing”
IST2 is the technical term for this stage of testing. Or put more simply as “Workflow Testing”. It brings together designated testers from hospital organizations across Northwestern Ontario to work through realistic, end-to-end healthcare scenarios and confirm that Meditech Expanse will function as intended for departments and roles.
Representing your Hospitals
IST2 is a week-long event in September, taking place at designated testing labs in Thunder Bay. Your organizations are represented by designated staff who bring knowledge of your local practices, workflows and patient care environments to the regional testing process.
At this point in time, the purpose of IST2 is not to test staff—its to test the system. Testers will confirm that information flows accurately and connected workflows function as expected from beginning to end.
Outcomes
Testing may identify defects, workflow gaps, or areas requiring further review. Finding these issues is an expected and valuable part of the process. Each issue identified creates an opportunity to investigate, make improvements and retest the system before Expanse is introduced into daily work.
IST2 will help:
- Validate that Expanse supports safe and effective workflows.
- Confirm that departments, systems and organizations can work together as intended.
- Identify and address issues early.
- Inform the next stages of testing, training and implementation readiness.
💡Think of IST2 as a dress rehearsal before the main event. It provides an opportunity to put Expanse through its paces in a controlled environment, learn where adjustments are needed and build confidence in the system before go-live.

Next Steps
Following IST2, the program will review the results, address identified issues and prepare for the next stage of testing: Parallel Testing, put more simply ” Organizational Testing “.
While IST2 is conducted regionally in Thunder Bay, Parallel Testing will take place locally at each participating hospital site. During this phase, local testers will compare results from Expanse with those from their organization’s current systems to further validate local workflows and confirm that the system is operating as expected.
We will continue to share updates as testing progresses, and our organization moves closer to implementing Meditech Expanse.
